This past weekend was one of many important firsts in the life of my 5 year old son, Zack. You probably already know about his passion for cars. If not, my blog post "Boys and Cars" explains it all. Basically, to say he loves cars would be an understatement. This past weekend, he got to drive for the first time, his uncle (my husband's childhood friend/brother from another mother/best man at our wedding) visited us from St. Vincent for the first time, and Zack went to his first Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Anyway, so there's this place here in Austin called K1 Speed. It's an indoor go kart race track. Zack had been dying to drive a "real car" since he found out there were cars that were just his size. The first time my husband took him to race, he wasn't tall enough. In a matter of months, two maybe three, Zack grew about .7 inches. He has about 3 growth spurts per year. He's not Paul Bunyan, but at almost 6 years old, he is the size of an average 8 year old. So with new height and with the help of a fresh pair of Skechers, he finally reached just above the 48 inch height requirement for Junior Racers. As soon as we told him that he was tall enough this time, he jumped and said,"Yes! This is going to be the best day of my life!"
This is the face of hope...
During & After
That was Saturday.
Sunday, it was time for the F1 U.S. Grand Prix at Circuit of The Americas. Zack loves Formula 1 about as much as NASCAR. Fans (like Uncle Sanjay) and drivers come from all over the world to participate in F1 races. I had no idea there were different kinds of racing. I'm not eve sure I'm using proper terminology here, so I'll move on. My husband, Billy, and Uncle Sanj were at Circuit of the Americas all weekend, but Zack joined them for race day. His team (Red Bull) won and there were donuts. It was basically perfect.

Zack looking on (that's Uncle Sanj behind him)...
I'm so happy he gets to grow up in a town that has an F1 race track. He is living his dream! The equivalent of me living my dream at age 5 would be to have gotten a pony! He's so lucky.
That night at bed time, Zack summed up his weekend the way Patrick Swayze did in Dirty Dancing.
Zack said, "Mom, this was my best weekend ever. I had the time of my life."
That was not an understatement.
