I went. I saw. I SO did not conquer. For me the Gypsy Picnic was all gypsy, no picnic. But me and my guys still had a great time!
My first mistake was going late in the day in the first place. I figured if we went after the boy's nap time, we'd have a long pleasant evening out. We got there two hours before it was scheduled to end thinking the lines would be shorter and that there would be fewer people there. Wrong. What there was less of was food. Many of the trailers had hitched up and hit the road, and others, including the one I stood in line a half-hour for was out of food...which I found out when I got to the front of the line as I was about to place my order. I laughed and told the guy he'd better think about telling all the other people snaked around the line behind me what he was out of, 'cause I couldn't be the only one with my mouth fixed for the one thing they were out of. He agreed.
So I called my husband, who had taken our toddler over to see the band, and left a voicemail, then texted him that I was hanging out, foodless, with our stroller here...
...which I was perfectly content to do. The band was great, and I was standing right beside Elixer Coffee where there was lots of coffee and a very short line. So I hung out and people watched, took a few crappy pictures with my cell phone and waited for my guys to join me. When they finally did, my boy, who (not unlike his mother) is known to bust a move at the first sound of anything resembling a tight beat regardless of where he might be, did what he do...and I snapped another crappy pic with my cell phone, did what I do...and posted this pic on Twitter...
So he danced. My husband did too, but I'll spare you pics of his dancing...awesome as it was (we're a dancing family...it's what we do). And we enjoyed the awesome Austin crowd and awesome Austin weather. I posted a few more less uncrappy pics over on my facebook page.
My biggest regret was not wearing makeup. News 8 Austin approached me in the line and asked if they could talk to me and I declined. I like a good, 'did you see me on the news' story just like the next guy, but I need to be a little fabulous looking if I'm gonna be all up on y'alls big screens.
The best thing about the festival is that now, I'm aware of all the best food trailers in Austin and exactly where to find them, thanks to the maps over on the Gypsy Picnic website. Living out in the suburbs, I never think of Food Trailers as options. As a busy stay at home mom living in the suburbs and happily claiming Austin as my home, I'm ALways in the city. Now a whole slew of coffee, lunch and snack options have opened up for me. Next year, I'm definitely going to be one of the first people at that thing...toddler's nap time be damned.
Are you an Austin Food Trailer fan? What are some of your favorites?

Nice feast! It would go nicer to have a limo to service you on your favorite events.
