So I was on Facebook the other day and ran across this challenge on Afroniquely You. On her website, Afroqueenshae outlines her suggested method for deep conditioning hair for maximum moisturizing and minimum breakage. This challenge could not have come at a better time for me.
I'm a long way away from my glorious pre-baby hair days when most of the natural hairs on my head where all the same length and back when I actually had a hairline. Mother Nature is a byatch post-baby, like she gotta leave behind proof that "A Baby Was Made Here." She hooked me up with a pudgy belly and "new" boobs after I finished nursing, and tossed in a cakey scalp and disappearing hairline for good measure to one-up any move Spanx and push-up bras might make to cover up her handy work. I just sayin', you guys...not complaining...just sayin'. I feel honored and privileged to have a body capable of growing, nurturing and birthing a whole actual other human, and will happily undo all the reconstructive crunches and ab-work, whenever I am blessed with the chance to do it again. Unfortunately, I don't have a nice round head that would look good shaved, otherwise...
So last week, I accepted the The Challenge to do weekly deep conditioning treatments on my hair through the end of 2009. That's a lot of deep conditioning, but that's how serious I am about getting my hairline back and filling in the potholes from random breakage.
I'll post Challenge Updates as I change deep conditioning treatments. I'll be trying a few to find out what's out there and what works for me. There should be a new product bi-weekly or monthly depending on how much of the product I have. Of course I'll post pics from time to time. I'll also talk about any other cool hair products and gadgets I run across on this little journey back to healthy hair-dom. First update, Monday!

detangle your hair while in the shower with a paper towel on the sink next to the tub! use a wide toothed comb with a nice strong handle & detangle whilst the conditioner is in your hair!!! it's amazing! i would also recommend using OYIN HONEY HEMP CONDITIONER, as it detangles with ease and feels like silk as you comb through - but this is about Creme of Nature (which i do like as well)... lol

My best friend conditions and detangles by using a combination of Castor oil in a tub and the tripple action hair conditioner, but I forget who makes it. She says it is ok to use any kind of conditioner with the Castor oil as long as it has a good percentage of different kinds of oils in it. I have also heard mayonnaise as well as beer works well.
I would share the giveaway with her if I won it. She deserves the world, but rarely gets a break.

I guess I'm too late for the Creme of Nature giveaway, but I'll share my tips anyways. I use a Micro Haircap when I deep condition. You heat it up in the microwave and then put it on your head after you put in your favorite deep conditioner. Leave it on for 30 minutes while you do something else, and then take it off and rinse your hair. FYI, get the turban style. I have the one with the chin strap and it looks dorky. You can buy them here:

My favorite deep conditioners are Jessicurl and Ouidad

I am too late, right? I'm just assuming since your post here http://homegirl.typepad.com/home_girl/2009/05/my-first-ever-blog-giveaway-project-.html is closed to comments. If it is still open I would like to enter.

Another tip is to use pure coconut oil or pure shea butter on your hair.

You should try a combo of coconut oil and shea butter. Leave on your hair for 10 mins. then rinse. I use this on both mine and my daughter's hair and it keeps our hair shiny and scalps moist. I have not had a chance to try the new Cream of Nature treatments but I will as soon as I find a store in my area that carries it.

i just found creme of nature products and am waiting for them to arrive. but up to now i have usually put a deep conditioner like klesterol(i think that's how it is spelled) in and then wrap a hot towel around my head for about 5 minutes. i then rinse it out and it seems to detangle and soften.
i am switching to creme of nature products because i have some hair loss due to medicines and they are now using organic ingredients in their products that i am hoping will be easier on the hair i have left. i will let you know how they are working.
